Artifact: swot analysis
Reflection:
When it comes to digital equity, we often think about students and families that do not have access to the internet and computers. After working in a rural area, internet signals are weak. For some of my students, it’s not that they cannot afford internet, but internet signals and are scarce in this area of our county. My contribution to this artifact was creating the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis and presenting it to my administrators and technology team.
The SWOT analysis was created to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats about our technology tools and use. One of the weaknesses was that teachers were not familiar with different web 2.0 tools that students and teachers can utilize. I made sure to model and promote a few Web 2.0 tools digital tools and resources such as Kahoot, Quizlet, and Quizizz. Since we had a lack of technology available to students, I promoted BYOT with my students to level out the availability of technology for students. Knowing that not all students would be able to bring devices, our school resources would supplement. This helped with achieving equitable access to technology-related best practices for all students.
I learned that even though your school may have limited technology resources, BYOT can help supplement what your school does not have. This particularly works for the intermediate grade levels. Most of these students have devices so, with proper procedures for devices in place, parents would be more comfortable allowing their children to bring their devices to school for proper school use. One thing I would change would be to offer more options for teachers to learn about web 2.0 tools. Most of the teachers I work with have lots to do and often do not what any added items on their plates. I need to make sure I model and promote these tools appropriately and show how they make teachers’ lives easier and that it is not an added part of their many things to complete.
This artifact impacts our school improvement. It focuses on what we are doing well as a school with our technology, what we can improve on, what our weaknesses are, and what our threats are. This artifact can be assessed by presenting this information to the administrators and the technology team. We can come up with a plan to improve our weaknesses as a school and try to limit our threats, so students have access to equitable technology. This artifact can also be assessed by teacher observations based on the information presented during staff meetings.
