Standard 1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT analysis
Refection: A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity, and Threats analysis (SWOT) was completed at my current school to determine how technology is used at school. We used ISTE’s diagnostic tool to discover where Poole Elementary was based on technology use. Since the SWOT analysis information was important, I shared the information with my administrative team. We planned on a one-hour meeting to discuss the results and shared ideas on how we can make improvements to our technology use.
The SWOT analysis demonstrated my ability to assess strengths and weaknesses in technology use, carefully analyze the data and information found, and report the findings to the administrative team. Part of my contribution was identifying how technology can be implemented into the school’s school improvement plan. Based on the plan, we began to design and develop a technology plan for our current situation. One plan was to facilitate and implement the use of the educational platform Canvas into their classrooms. Communication went out to the staff about how third through fifth grades would implement Canvas after professional learning occurs. We decided to implement this change after the ISTE diagnostic tool came back showing Poole met one area out of fourteen, we decided to communicate the information to staff. Administrators have access to all teachers’ and students’ Canvas usage and actions, it was communicated to the staff that administrators will evaluate their Canvas usage and develop a plan to provide more training if needed. My major role was to facilitate Canvas training and coach any teacher needing assistance or wanting extra help. I held training once a month for all staff members and made myself available to teachers to meet with me for extra coaching if needed. Teachers that I met with one on one often reached out to me, and I had one situation where the administration asked me to assist a teacher with usage.
The SWOT analysis was interesting to complete. I learned that, as a school, we had lots of weaknesses that needed to be addressed, and our strengths needed to be reinforced more with the staff. Based on our new reading and writing curriculum, technology use has dwindled. The leadership team wanted to improve our technology use after I presented the SWOT, so we decided to keep it simple. I wanted to show the staff all of the web 2.0 tools that I learned during my courses, but Canvas was an easier way to incorporate technology. I demonstrated how teachers can take their reading and writing assignments and create a Canvas course for students to complete the assignments on Canvas. When I shared that Canvas will grade the assessments and assignments and that you can use them year after year, many were interested and created their first assignments. The weaknesses are beginning to increase because of a new math program our county is using. The only time technology can be used is for science or social studies projects. During my training's, I would have also focused on social students and science projects with the staff. Reading, writing, and math time are accounted for, so I would have focused more and other areas so teachers can use Canvas for social students or science projects to be completed at home. My main focus was on reading.
As a result of the SWOT analysis, teachers gained knowledge about Canvas, our district’s educational platform, and started to utilize the educational platform more often with their students. Middle school and High school teachers use Canvas often with their classes, and having our teachers become proficient with Canvas would benefit the students in their technology use, as well as preparing them for the future. It impacts our professional development because teachers are under utilizing Canvas which our school district wants us to utilize.
